Concerned over the growing scarcity of quality faculty pool in the country, which is key for grooming talented workforce particularly in professional education institutions, the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has decided to fund doctoral research in reputable institutions to encourage quality academic research.
The company will fund doctoral research to be taken up by 200 students at Ph.D level over a period of five years with 40 students every year. Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the company N. Chandrasekaran announced this at the two-day annual academic session of TCS called “Sangam” with the faculty of engineering and management colleges from across the country at Hyderabad on Friday.
Selection
“There is an urgent need for focused research at a time when business models are changing fast with new technologies”, the CEO said and added that the TCS programme would encourage exploration of new ideas by funding young researchers. Academic institutions concerned and TCS would finalise the process of candidates' selection for TCS fellowships and they would pursue research in various aspects of computer science.
The core objective of TCS fellowships would be enhancing the quality of emerging workforce by supporting students, faculty and institutions, Mr. Chandrasekaran noted. Such an initiative would also help the TCS in its talent acquisition in the long run, he hoped. The TCS fellows would have an open option to join the organisation after completion of their research, but there won't be any compulsion, as the initiative was aimed at generating talent base useful for the industry in general and TCS in particular.
Recruitment drive
Good news for students who are going to graduate soon is that the TCS has also decided to launch a major recruitment drive soon to pick up talent by visiting colleges in December and January.
The number is likely to be very high as it is planning to foray its software solutions into pharmaceutical, healthcare and aerospace sectors. The company has offered employment to 24,885 young graduates this year.
As part of its Academic Interface Programme (AIP) the TCS is also helping students, faculty and institutions by linking itself with 499 academic institutes in India and 85 overseas during 2008-09 benefiting 52,000 students and 4,000 faculty members, Head of Global HR of the company Ajoy Mukherjee said.
