Nothing ‘cool' about smoking

Creating awareness: Students participating in an anti-tobacco rally in Visakhapatnam recently.

It is very pathetic that young students at early stages of their life begin to smoke and ruin their health. Any girl with minimum awareness about health and environmental hazards caused by smoking would never get impressed with a guy who smokes. Perhaps, the wrong notion that smoking is a fashion statement is due to the influence of movies most of which showcase smoking as a trend.

It is not enough just to be aware of the ill-effects of smoking but what is important is that they consciously give it up. Guys are advised to gradually give up smoking by cutting down the number of cigarettes they smoke per day. For this, limiting their budget for cigarettes may help to a great extent. Meditation and Yoga may be helpful to calm down the mind and to help increase will power.

‘Smoking' -- the word itself has become a fashion statement for young students. Many are least bothered of the warnings displayed in the cigarette packs. Special counselling, motivation classes and interactive drives are needed to create awareness about the evil effect of smoking, particularly in colleges and educational institutions.

Despite the health hazards, even the educated people are prone to smoking. It might give them a sense of pleasure or might work as a tool to impress their peer group. They are not hesitant to try such things in spite of being warned as “Injurious to health.” Girls are neither impressed nor would like to move around with such people who are addicted to smoking. The same applies also to the girls especially in cities who are increasingly falling for the cigarettes. Proper guidance by parents & colleges authorities can help students from not smoking or getting addicted to cigarettes.

“Why do people smoke. Does it give a stylish appearance or does smoking gives them some relief from distress?

With these thoughts one starts smoking and the mind gets fixed to the state "we get relief when we smoke" and gets addicted to smoking but they do not realise that they are digging their own grave.

These days it is not just boys but girls are also smoking. Why does this happening? Mostly because of friends, movies and the atmosphere they live and get influenced by watching others smoke. This can be prevented by banning scenes in movies which involve smoking. Counselling sessions should be conducted by students themselves students do not pay much attention to elders (teachers and parents) but they will listen to their friends.

Well it's time for smokers to realise how badly they are manipulated into smoking. It is time to fight back and stop being a hostage of the tobacco industry. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke increases your heart rate and blood pressure. This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs amputated. My advice to smokers is : Whatever you do, please don't ever try to quit, and if you plan to quit smoking one day, today is a really good day!

These days everything is posh and trendy for youngsters, even it is not good for health. Regarding men they like to imitate their film hero, few will have interest in having a six-pack, drive a bike or car the way a hero drives but many will have interest in the way a hero smokes. Few girls might also have the same interest in which the hero smokes.

A Boy does anything for girl, then he starts smoking to impress the girl and he becomes smoker. I suggest girls not to get impressed on smoking, they need to make their friends to be away of smoking, they shouldn't make any one to try smoking. Girls should honestly say that she hates smokers then no men starts smoking. I suggest college girls in making rally's that we don't like smokers or against smoking, then the intention of men could change and few may even stop smoking.

It's unfortunate that students are getting addicted to smoking cigars and cigarettes. Instead of educating the uneducated people about the bad consequences of smoking, they are committing the same mistake. Trying to impress girls through smoking is a wrong notion.

There's a saying that “where there is a will there is a way”, if people really want to quit the habit, it's very easy and also possible. People, who are real citizens of the nation, will not encourage smoking.

It is the character which matters in a person either a boy or a girl. But now due to the effect of the movies, youngsters are attracted to smoking and liquor. Any girl would not ask her fiancée to spoil his health by smoking . If she does that is just attraction but not true love. So, more than style character matters much in a boy

As a student of dentistry, I strongly feel that tobacco stains on guys. Their teeth are unsightly and will definitely not impress a girl. Smoking among youngsters is rampant despite efforts to stop the use of tobacco and it destroys our vital organs gradually. Smoking scenes in films should be banned. Parents and teachers should counsel children and warn them against the hazards of smoking.

De-addiction centres and online support groups should help smokers to get rid of this evil habit.

Cigarette smoking is harmful and it is nothing but reducing the span of ones life. We humans have the beautiful gift of God - the brain and utilizing its intelligence, we many a times forget to use it efficiently. This is what is the main cause of this menace.

Smoking affects every part of our body from head to toes still we are so adamant that we don't wish to quit smoking.

Tar of the smoke contains more than 60 substances which cause cancer. 87% lung cancer death occurs due to smoking. Please remember smoking reduces fertility in both men and women.

Evil attracts effectively than good. This rhetoric is absolutely true in the case of smoking. This may be one reason for increasing cigarette smokers. In the beginning youth start smoking after being influenced by their favourite heroes or to get some thrill.

Surprisingly, female smokers are also increasing gradually. This is not surely expected from them.

They could change this bad habit by switching their vision to some other innovative tasks. Even it is good for both their health and beauty. Government should invoke high taxes on cigarettes and print skull, corpse images in catchy manner followed by warning statements on cigarette packets. Celebs should not interact with any activities that encourages smoking. Navatej Kumar.

When a girl knows that smoking is dangerous and can attack her guy with all sorts of cancers and lung infections in the future, which in turn can affect her health, no girl will ever dare to enter into a relationship with such a guy. So boys, come out of all the falsification and immediately quit smoking and try other healthy ways to attract girls.

S. Sami

The idea that smoking is ‘glamorous' or ‘cool', reflects maturity has been exploited in the promotion and advertising of cigarettes. But, it has failed in achieving its result in the ideas of some girls particularly in the cities. It's just daft stupid, they think boys who smoke are crazy. They think that smoking boys are posh and city cultured.

Some girls do like driving crazy with smokers around the cities and making this notion as a fashion in the life styles of teens and adults. Such people should know the consequences of smoking.

S. Prem Kumar,

B.Tech, National Institute of Technology, Warangal.

One of the main reasons for youth to get involved in smoking is they get influenced by movies.

People try to imitate there favourite actors and actresses, it is unfortunate to see that all stars smoke in movies irrespective of sex, though there is a ban on showing such scenes. It is tough for chain smokers to stop smoking at once, they can consult psychologist. Smoking is useless, in no way it helps body and mind. “Prevention is better than cure”, “health is wealth”.
