Healthy interaction on campus stressed
The students of the Lakireddy Bali Reddy College of Engineering (LBRCE), Mylavaram, have come out forcefully in support of a healthy but limited interaction on the campus instead of ushering in a serious and non-interactive atmosphere in the name of anti-ragging measures.
The first-year students of LBRCE participated in a Group Discussion organised by The Hindu Education Plus Club, when they freely expressed their opinions and made some suggestion for the improvement of campus relations in general. Nearly 9 students drawn from different departments took part in the discussion on the topic “Anti-ragging measures on college campuses”.
While some participants stressed the need for more stringent laws for banning ragging completely, others spoke in favour of a soft stance to the extent of allowing a healthy and non-complicated interaction between freshers and senior students. In a free atmosphere, there would be sharing of information and ideas, which would be very important for the transformation of a student of professional courses into a competitive career maker.
A girl student said that a total ban on the ragging menace should be there while the college managements should ensure free exchange of information among all students so that it would foster the spirit of learning.
She felt that for the sake of introduction and initiation of an exchange, there should be at least one interaction when first year students can be queried for briefing to others about them.
One participant opined that if free interaction was allowed, the first year students would stand to benefit by getting guidance and information from the seniors with regard to various aspects of the campus.
He hastened to add that this exchange should not be allowed to exceed a certain point where juniors may feel completely shaken or out of place. Another student said that there was no guarantee that a senior student would remain within limits even in the first interaction and this was the reason why a complete ban be enforced on the ragging menace.
He wanted the colleges to give tough punishments without hesitation if anybody was found guilty of resorting to ragging.
