Hard facts: Experts explaining how they tackled the downturn

Managing HR

Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME) conducted a two-day seminar in Bangalore on ‘Managing HR during the recent downturn: Experience of some of the best Indian companies.' Inaugurating the event, Krishnakumar Natarajan, CEO and MD, MindTree Consulting, spoke about managing human capital and building long-term assets. K. Ramkumar, Director- HR, ICICI Bank, explained the role of pervasive leadership and how it helped the bank to survive the economic downturn. Padmaja Alaganandhan, India Business Leader-Human Capital, Mercer Consulting India Pvt. Ltd, took a critical look at the recent economic happenings and the way forward. The Hindu was the media partner for the event.

The first session focussed on the manufacturing industry and consisted of eminent speakers such as J.N. Amrolia, Executive Director, Constructions and Allied Business, Ashok Leyland; S. Ramesh Shankar, Sr. Vice-Preident, ABB Ltd., and Anirudh Singh, Director-Corporate HR, JSW Steel Ltd. The subsequent sessions covered the HR perspective from different domains pertaining to IT-ITES, Hospitality, Retailing and Consultancy sectors.

Convocation

Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) organised its first annual convocation on November 12 in Bangalore. A total of 93 students who had pursued the industry-integrated two-year MBA programme of Madurai Kamaraj University were conferred the post-graduate degree.

RIMS also awarded two gold medals, four silver medals and six trophies to students who topped in the different streams. T. Parabrahman, Chairman, CII (Karnataka) and Managing Director, Kirloskar Toyota Textiles, delivered the convocation address and Pallab Bandyopadhyay, Vice-President and HR-Asia Pacific, Pacific Systems, was the chief guest. Prakash P. Mallya, Director, Bank of India, was present.

Business meet

The Doha round of negotiations under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the changing fiscal regime in the country would open up opportunities for companies involved in international trade, said J.V. Patil, Joint Director-General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, here on Friday. “These opportunities must be utilised by management students by developing a good understanding of the complexities and dynamics of international business,” he said. He was speaking after inaugurating a conference on “international business and the world economy — issues and innovations,” organised by Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NIMT).

G. Ramanathan, General Manager, Syndicate Bank, said that commercial banks facilitated the processes of international business by enabling access to foreign currency and credit. He said that forex trading provided good opportunities for students pursuing management courses. Students presented papers on international marketing, international finance, international business and international human resources management. In all, 32 papers on various topics were presented. The papers were evaluated by a panel that included B. Janakiram from M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, M.B. Murthy from Sheshadripuram College, and G. Nagalingappa from PES Institute of Technology.

Moot court competition

A three-member team from the University Law College (ULC), Bangalore University, bagged the Best Memorial Prize at the First All-India Corporate Moot Court Competition conducted by the National Law University, Delhi, in association with UKCA Law Chambers. The team comprising A. Mahesh Chowdhary, Shiva Srinivasan and Arnav Singh also stood third in the overall ranking at the competition in which over 25 law schools from across the country participated.

Encouraging research

With the goal of encouraging cutting-edge research in embedded systems, Synopsis (India) will donate 20 laptops to PES Institute of Technology (PESIT), Bangalore. Pradip Dutta, Managing Director and Vice-President, Synopsis (India), said that the donation is a token of appreciation for the research initiatives undertaken by the institute. The laptops, equipped with Synopsis tools, will provide the students with necessary exposure and training in the field of VLSI.

Distinction awards

The 23rd Distinction Award Ceremony (DAC) to felicitate meritorious students was held on November 8 at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore. Retired Supreme Court Judge, Shivraj V. Patil, gave away Free Engineering Education Scholarships and Distinction Awards worth more than Rs.27.5 lakh to deserving students. Pai Deepa, Ramya Sengutuvan and Pratyusha K.M. won the maximum awards.

Mr. Patil advised the student community to judiciously follow the 3H — Hardwork, Honesty and Humility — formula to attain success in life. PES Chairman M.R. Doreswamy called upon the students to be job providers rather than job seekers and asserted the importance of recognising and promoting talent in educational institutes.
