‘Maa Telugu Talli’ to be or not to be…

At wits’ end: The rendition of ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ has stirred up a controversy.

I think, there is nothing wrong in criticising the song ‘Maa Telugu...’ by Telangana supporters. As we are losing our resources, jobs, especially our pride in the joint State, we can’t linger any longer in such sentiments. We are being treated as second class citizens in our own region, so we don’t accept ‘Maa Telugu ...’ which does not represent anything about Telangana.

Recently a Muslim organisation issued a ‘fatwa’ against singing ‘Vandemataram’, the catalyst for warriors during our freedom movement. When such stands are justified, then opposing ‘Maa telugu...’ is also not wrong. Telangana supporters never use such type of issues for their mileage. As an Indian it is everyone’s right. Isn’t it?

There are certain issues like recent floods, drought, etc., that need to be raised at global platform. Then, there some based on regions, like the Telangana Statehood issue. But all regional issues may not gain national interest. Instead of realising this, some choose wrong platforms to gain mileage out of regional issues and this is what TRS did.

Here, the common language (Telugu) has nothing to do with the other more vital aspects. But the politicians are misinterpreting the situation and misleading the people who are in anxious for a separate State. Condemning such issues does not sideline the Telangana issue. However, the decision taken by government to make singing ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ mandatory in all the school assembly prayers is appreciable.

The recent controversy that drew everyone’s attention about the misuse of a very popular revolutionary song Em pillado eldumostavaa by Mr.Vangapandu in a movie, is illogical. It was magnified and snowballed into a controversy contributing indirectly to the publicity to the movie.

Likewise, prohibiting singing of ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ by K. Chandrasekhar Rao is nothing but folly and frenzy. The song indicates the unity of the people of Andhra Pradesh who formed a separate State on a linguistic basis.

In this context, if one argues whether it was a Telangana song or Rayalaseema song or coastal Andhra song, it tantamounts to being simply ridiculous. So, I opine that it’s not fair to do such illogical things and spark off dispute among public who are living in harmony for decades.

It’s very unfortunate that even singing ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ in school assembly prayers gets politicised, which in fact has nothing to do with the sentiments of any region. But a few people are desperately trying to make an issue out of it. Such people found responsible for this kind of hostile propaganda should be strictly punished. These anti-social elements are just playing with the sentiments of the people for their selfish ends.

The media is also being used as a scapegoat here. The media should apprise people about the viable opinions of experts and should see that the people are not misguided. Any person who airs his/her opinion should make sure that his point of view does not backfire causing harm to others.

Now-a-days, politicians seem to have hit upon a easy way to hog the limelight - commenting upon each and everything, unmindful of repurcussions. Accidental deaths, natural calamities, national anthem or State song or for that matter anything can be politicised to derive political mileage. People should not fall a prey to such ill-motivated remarks. They should take it upon themselves to rebutt such comments through media. It is when they face public wrath in the form of viewpoints expressed through different media, will our politicians stop making irresponsible and controversial comments.

In these days everyone is on the lookout for cheap publicity and the media is too ready to highlight and support this. First it was Mahatma issue in the film ‘Magadheera’ that triggered an unnecessary controversy. Now it is the turn on a popular old patriotic song ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ which has nothing to do with Telangana Statehood. KCR is known for such gimmicks and this is just one such.

Of late, politicians think that the only way to draw people’s attention is by criticising someone or protesting against something, so that they get the support of people who come in their zone. For example, the pro-Telangana activists are criticising the song – ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ that it does not represent Telangana region. This is to spur Telangana people and woo them for votes. So, if the people understand that they are falling a prey to such traps set by politicians they will understand that they are being hoodwinked. Sankarambadi Sundarachari, who penned the song, would never have thought that the State would get divided on regional lines. He had envisaged a strong and united Andhra Pradesh with the blessings of ‘Telugu Talli’. If only he can hear this controversy over his song, he would turn in his grave now.

Politicisation of songs or events has now become the order of the day for momentary publicity or financial gain. We’re witnessing people raising frivolous objections to movie songs and others like our regional anthem. These people should remember that, the public will reject any song or activity which is against social good. They’d rather concentrate on their core activity than raise such trivial issues which not only belittle them in the eyes of others but also lead to loss of credibility.

Songs are written out of passion, love, devotion towards person, nation, etc. The views of the writer are to be well understood by others. One should not criticise the patriotism of writers. The song ‘Maa telugu talli’ written by Sankarambadi Sundarachari brings out the greatness of Andhra Pradesh in its culture, resources, education, etc., but people are trying to politicise the song to gain mileage.

I feel that persons behind these controversies are just creating hype in media and in the press so as to highlight themselves. But really speaking there is nothing in those to gain out of such issues. Instead, if such people concentrate on welfare of the downtrodden in the society it will be beneficial.

Andhra Pradesh was formed many years ago. ‘Maa Telugu Talli’ song was declared an official anthem of the State after it was formed. The song praises the great men of this State.

It does not highlight any region per se. Every song that develops patriotism among people must be given preference and at the same time must be taken positively. Now-a-days some political parties are raising disparities between regions with a motive.
