SVIMS doctor bags FAMS degree

C.V. Harinarayan, head of Endocrinology & Metabolism at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, has been selected for the prestigious FAMS degree.

The award was presented to him by Prema Ramachandran, president, National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in recognition of his contribution to the field of metabolic bone diseases. FAMS degree is the highest and most coveted hallmark of distinction in medical profession given for original academic work.

Documentation

Dr. Harinarayan has documented, through population surveys, the high prevalence of low dietary calcium intake and varying degrees of Vitamin D deficiency in Andhra Pradesh.

Revision of norms

This work could potentially contribute to revision of national guidelines of dietary allowances for calcium and Vitamin D.

The doctor’s research work has shown the pivotal link played by the kidney in the causation of fluoro-toxic bone diseases.
