Full of details: S. Vincent, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (centre), releasing the proceedings of a seminar on ‘quality enhancement’ at Yadava College.

The Department of Tamil of Thiagarajar College conducted a seminar for research scholars. Research papers were presented on various topics by P. Sathyavani and S. Muthusamy. A book, ‘Chennai Noolagankal,’ was reviewed by S. Tamilarasan. K. Pandialakshmi welcomed the gathering and V. Neelakandan proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of English of the college conducted a two-day lecture programme on ‘English Today’ by R. Vivekanandan, Associate Professor in English, Hodeida University, Republic of Yemen. He focused on the origin of the Indo-European languages and explained the context of yesterday’s English. He also gave an outline of the evolution of the English language from the Proto-Indo European Language (PIE). He also spoke about the influence of Grimm’s Law on contemporary English. Dr. Vivekanandan explained the varieties of English prevailing all over the world and stressed the role of communication in the present scenario. S. Rajeswari, vice-president, English Association, welcomed the gathering and secretary B. Shalini proposed a vote of thanks.

A seminar on ‘Quality enhancement strategy – towards excellence,’ sponsored by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, was organised by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Yadava College. In his inaugural address, S. Vincent, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, said that quantity education was essential for enhancing the quality of the nation. P. Alagesan, convenor, IQAC, welcomed the gathering. P. Rengan, Principal, delivered the presidential address. K.P. Navanneetha Krishnan, correspondent, offered felicitations. The first copy of the proceedings was released by Dr. Vincent and it was received by Mr. Navaneetha Krishnan. The second copy was released by P. Christie, Director, LIBA, Loyola College, and it was received by Dr. Vincent. P. Ramapandi, Vice-Principal, proposed a vote of thanks.



Winners of IT Vision, inter-collegiate meet, held at Madurai Institute of Social Sciences.

The Department of Tamil’s Centre for Advanced Tamil Research organised a seminar for research scholars in which M. Murugan reviewed the book, ‘Sooranai Thedum Voor.’ Head of the department, V. Mohan, presided.

The Yadava College of Education was inaugurated on Yadava College campus by Ponnambala Desigar of Kundrakudi Mutt. A. Ganapathy, Principal, Yadava College of Education, welcomed the august gathering. A. Thangavelu, president of the college, presided.

The Police Commissioner, K. Nandabalan, and Prof. Rengan offered felicitations. S.P. Sivarama Krishnan proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology of Madurai Institute of Social Sciences organised an inter-collegiate meet, ‘IT Vision 2K9,’ on the eve of its 40th year celebrations. The meet was inaugurates by S. T. Ramachandran of Madurai Institute of Engineering and Technology. T. Kumaresh Head, Department of CS and IT, welcomed the participants. Capt. D.V.P. Raja, chairman of the college, delivered the presidential address. P. N. Narayana Raja, Principal, D.V. Dharma Singh, secretary, and B. Chidambara Rajan, Principal, Madurai Institute of Engineering and Technology addressed the participants.

Around 400 students from 34 colleges took part in academic and fine arts competitions. Fatima College won the overall championship at the meet.

An induction programme for first years MBA students was organised at Nadar Mahajana Sangam S. Vellaichamy Nadar College. Aravind Srinivasan, Administrator, Aravind Eye Care System, the chief guest, said that India was bestowed with a large population below 40 years of age and it would propel the country to the status of an economic superpower. P. Mahendravel, correspondent, presided. S. Asokan, Principal, welcomed the gathering. S. Yogeshwari proposed avote of thanks.

A workshop on quality excellence and quality sustenance in education was organised by Sourashtra College for teachers. S. David Amirtharajan, Dean, Madurai Kamaraj University, in his inaugural address, examined the ways in which quality could be infused while teaching by the syllabus. He also evaluated the parameters of testing quality in education such as inclusiveness, relevance, quality and value. T.S. Balakrishnan, convenor, IQAC, welcomed the gathering. R.L. Ramnath, Principal, delivered the presidential address.

The papers presented at the seminar highlighted many aspects of good teaching. V. Gopathy proposed a vote of thanks.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of K.L.N. College of Engineering organised an interaction programme with Himanshu Goyal, Country Manager, Academic Initiatives, IBM, for students at the IBM Centre of Excellence. N. Lakshmi Narasimman, Head, Department of CSE, welcomed the participants.

“Don’t worry about recession,” said Mr. Goyal. “No company has stopped hiring people, including IBM.” He asked the students not to worry about getting hired but worry about getting a job and getting fired. The companies were firing only a minuscule amount of people with less capabilities and they still wanted people with real capabilities and innovative ideas. “People who worry about recession are people who don’t have confidence on their skills,” he added. He advised students to improve their communication skills.

The Electronics and Communication Engineering Association of Velammal College of Engineering and Technology conducted an elocution contest to celebrate the birth anniversary of S. R. Ranganathan.

Around 15 students from all engineering branches participated in the contest in which Arasi Pratap, Vice-Principal, Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, acted as the judge. V.S. Uma Mahesh bagged the Dr. S.R. Ranganathan Memorial Trophy. S. Padma Priya and S. Sarath Ramakrishnan won the second and third prizes.

Independence Day was celebrated with a difference by C.S.I. College of Education. The students, who formed themselves into groups, selected a village school each and trained the children on specific themes. About a dozen village school children exhibited their talents through dance, elocution, essay writing and drawing. It was not the prize that attracted them most but they being recognised as representative of their school and village. Parents, teachers and villagers were delighted to know that their children were invited by the city college to perform in a competition with other school children.

Rt. Rev. Christopher Asir, Bishop, stressed the need for B. Ed. students to undergo internship of a minimum of three months in village schools and said that industries could support such programmes.

Daniel Thangaraj emphasised why the Independence Day should be made more meaningful for young children. J.P. Gabriel, Director, delivered the key note address.

The English Association of P. K. N. Arts and Science College was inaugurated by Jeyapal Sathiasaran of Vickram College of Engineering and Technology. A symposium on skill enrichment was also held on the occasion. C. Selvi, Head, Department of English, welcomed the gathering. J. Mahatman Rao, Principal, presided. Prof. Jeyapal, in his address, brought out some practical methods of effective teaching to enhance communicative skills of students. P. Gayathri, Lecturer, proposed a vote of thanks.
