Avinashilingam University for Women organised an orientation programme for the freshers. Welcoming the students, Chancellor of the university T.K. Shanmuganandam highlighted the importance of value-based education that was being provided by the university. Vice-Chancellor Saroja Prabhakaran introduced the office-bearers of the union and impressed upon them to maintain a high degree of discipline and decorum for a fruitful learning experience.
The Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology organised a workshop on “Research Problem Identification and Model Development” on the college premises. The resource person N. Elangovan, G.R.G. Institute of Management Studies, spoke on the topic. Students made presentations on various topics.
Shri Nehru Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science conducted a programme ‘Inter-religious Harmony and Peace’ to welcome the first-year undergraduate students. Kumaraguru Swamigal, Kaumara Madalayam, Fr. Joy Thomas of ‘Divyodaya’, Gowtham Suman, Managing Trustee, Coimbatore Journalists’ Welfare Trust, Association, and N. Abdul Hakkim Hajrath, Principal, Markzul Hidhya Imam, Podanur, spoke to the students about the greatness of the various scriptures.
The alumni meet of the M. Sc. (Applied Sciences) 1988-1990 batch of PSG College of Technology was held recently. Members of the batch along with their family visited the Fantasy Park in Palakkad on the first day. The next day saw games events and a valediction at the Coimbatore Club. The batch decided to sponsor one deserving student of the college.
The Department of Microbiology of Nehru Arts and Science College organised a one-day seminar on “Boost Your Brain Power”. Chief Guest V. Krishnamoorthy, Lecturer, Department of Management Studies, Kongu Engineering College, Erode, conducted the seminar. He spoke to the students on the various factors that influenced the memory.
The KG College of Arts and Science held its first graduation day ceremony recently. Ansul Mishra, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner, was the chief guest. He delivered the graduation day address and distributed the degree certificates. The pledge was administered to the graduates by the Principal.
The students and staff of K.S.G. College of Arts and Science have become members of the Students’ Group Insurance Scheme of the United India Insurance Company Limited. Parents of J. Marshal, student of the college, who had died in an accident in January, were given a cheque for Rs. 1.5 lakh by representatives of the insurance company.
CMS College of Science and Commerce organised counselling for its students on the evils of addiction to observe the World Anti-Drugs Day. Counsellors were arranged by the Aishwariam Social Welfare Organisation and Resource Training Centre. The counsellors used audio-visual aids to drive home the de-addiction mission.
Ranganathan Engineering College and HCL Infosystems entered into a memorandum of understanding for launching the HCL K2 Academy at the college. Srinivasan Chakravarthy, Zonal Manager, HCL, Chennai, said that besides technical skills, it was important to develop hardware and networking systems.
Karpagam University organised a function to welcome the freshers. Chancellor of the university R. Vasantha Kumar welcomed the students and urged them to utilise the opportunities provided by the university. He also stressed the significance of communication skills and personality development. There was an interaction session with parents.
The NSS units of Sree Narayana Guru College in association with Vasan Eye Care Hospital organised a complete eye check up for the students and staff of the college. Nearly 1,600 students and 80 faculty members got their eyes tested.
Kongunadu Arts and Science College entered into a memorandum of understanding with CINVESTAV, Mexico, for collaborative research, promotion of student exchange programmes and launching of academic programmes. The MoU was signed by Velumani Subramaniam of CINVESTAV and M. Aruchami, secretary and director of the college. The MoU would be for five years and both the parties would work to promote research in sustainable energy, micro systems and nanotechnology, biomedical engineering and other sciences.
Kumaraguru College of Technology organised a faculty development programme on “Scientific Teaching Model and Knowledge Management”. President of the college C. Ramasamy inaugurated the programme and spoke on teaching methods. More than 80 faculty members attended the programme.
The G.R. Govindarajulu School of Applied Computer Technology organised a national symposium on “Research Methods and Research Directions in Computer Science and Engineering”. Inaugurating the symposium, Narasimhan Sundararajan, professor, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, said Indian academic scholars should develop a passion for research. Research in technology would make India a future leader, he said.
A function was organised by the staff and students of Amrita Vishwa Vidhyapeetham to welcome the first year B. Tech students. Students along with their parents had come to attend the programme. The Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Dean (Engineering), Registrar and faculty were present. After the briefing, the students were taken around the campus in order to get familiarised with the various facilities in the academic and non-academic areas.
The NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion in Tirupur, affiliated to Bharathiar University, conducted a ‘welcome function’ for the first year students on the institute premises.
In all, 200 students had enrolled for four B Sc programmes in design, production, processing and merchandising and B. Com. in garment cost accounting this year.
N.Gokarneshan, principal of the college, explained the course modules and the employment opportunities in each of the segments in the textile production chain.
