The Confederation of Indian Industry-Institute of Quality (CII-IQ) in a short span of time has become a centre of excellence, with the help of entrepreneurs, business leaders and academia.
The Centre for TQM in Education has created a niche for itself and helped the academia to grow beyond teaching. Some of the goals of the centre are:
To create and enhance awareness on excellence in education, towards providing world class education.
To recognise educational institutions making progress on the journey towards excellence.
To help educational institutions understand and apply principles of TQM for improving their operational processes.
To provide a platform for sharing of good practices and strategies amongst the educational institutions.
Schools, colleges, government bodies, and NGOs involved in education have taken the ideology of quality in education to all the stakeholders and have already brought about changes. By juxtaposing the thoughts of the centre with the ideals of your institution you will surely benefit and help in imparting quality education which will help in nation building. For more information, you should contact P. Girish, Principal Counsellor, CII-Institute of Quality, near Bharat Nagara 2nd Stage, Magadi Road, Vishwaneedam Post, Bangalore-560 091. Ph: 2328 6085. Your aspiration to pursue studies in Surgery in the U.S. is worth it. The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination for medical licensure in the U.S. and is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The Composite Committee, appointed by the FSMB and NBME, establishes rules for the programme. Membership includes representatives from the following: FSMB, NBME, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), besides the American public.
The USMLE can be accomplished in the following phases:
Phase I: Assesses whether medical school students understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine.
Phase II: Assesses whether medical school students can apply medical knowledge, skills and understanding of clinical science essential for provision of patient care under supervision.
Phase III: Assesses whether medical school graduates can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine.
You can contact the USMLE authorities at www.usmle.org
The contact agency for medical graduates from countries other than the U.S. and Canada is: Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), 3624, Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-2685. Ph: 215-2865900. Fax: 215-3869196 www.ecfmg.org
Genetic engineering
I want to pursue studies in Genetic Engineering. Is there any university offering the programme at the graduation level in India? I do not mind inputs on B.Sc and B.E. as well.
Sarika Shivnath
via e-mail, Bangalore
Genetic Engineering, Genetic Modification and Gene Splicing are terms that indicate the process of manipulation genes, usually outside the organism’s normal reproductive process. It involves the isolation, manipulation and reintroduction of DNA into cells or model organisms, usually to express a protein. The objective is to introduce new characteristics or attributes physiologically or physically, such as making a crop resistant to herbicide.
A qualified genetic engineer must have a graduate / postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology or biochemistry OR a Ph.D. from a recognised university, based on 2-3 years of his own research under the guidance of a professor/lecturer.
The basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (B.E. / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology OR a bachelor’s degree in science or molecular biology.
Besides the IITs, you should also probe the idea of pursuing the programme in the following institutes and Universities:
1. Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. 2. Biochemical Engineering Research and Process Development Centre at IMTECH, Chandigarh. 3. Centre for DNA Finger Printing and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad. 4. Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. 5. Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. 6. National Facility for Animal Cell and Tissue Culture, Pune. 7. National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, has created a niche for itself. You can contact the Chairman, Department of Molecular Reproduction, Development and Genetics (MRDG), ( www.mrdg.iisc.ernet.in), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore-560 012. Ph: 2932659. Email: chairman@mrdg.iisc.ernet.in
