Kalasalingam University vice-chancellor C. Thangaraj honours a meritorious student during the 15th College Day celebrations of J.J. College of Engineering and Technology.

Discipline helped students cultivate a positive approach to life, the vice-chancellor of Kalasalingam University, C. Thangaraj, said addressing the College Day celebrations of J.J. College of Engineering and Technology recently.

Discipline also reflected the reputation of the college, he said, observing that students were fortunate to pass through the age of information explosion. Self-assessment, planning, preparation and hard work were the keys to success, Dr. Thangaraj said.

Despite the global recession, opportunities were abundant in every field provided students faced the competition with their strengths, he said. Principal S. Satyamoorthy presented the annual report and distributed prizes to academic achievers.

Candidates who had successfully completed the training programme offered for two batches by the Joseph’s Academy of Soft Skills were given certificates at a function conducted by the Academy last week.

The Rector of St. Joseph’s College and Founder Director of the Academy, Rev. Fr. S. Lazar, handed over the certificates to about 20 candidates in the presence of principal Rev. Fr. R. Rajarathinam, and an executive from the Bangalore-Based E2E (Education to Employment), Ajith.

The training was provided by the Academy with resource persons drawn from E2E. These candidates were interviewed for jobs by Oracle.

R.M. Manickavasagam, retired Professor of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Uttar Pradesh, delivered a lecture on ‘An Overview of Himalayan Metamorphic Belt’ at a meeting organised by the Geology Association of National College, recently.

Starting with the origin of the Himalayas, Prof. Manickavasagam dwelt on the separation of Indian continent from the African Plate, and the collision of Indian Plate with the Asian Plate.

He described the lithological and structural characteristics of the Himalayan mountain belt. His Power Point presentation depicted the virgin parts of the Himalayas. Principal K. Anbarasu also addressed the students.

The Physics and Chemistry departments (Unaided Courses) organised a special lecture programme.

N. Vembu from Urumu Dhanalakshmi College spoke on ‘Crystallography and its Application’.

The Tiruchi Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) conducted a day-long workshop last week on ‘Basics of Materials Joining’ for the benefit of 115 students of Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology and MAM College of Engineering.

The workshop held at MAM College focussed on materials; their classification and weldability; the shielded metal arc welding process; the tungsten inert gas welding process; the gas metal arc welding process; the significance of weld defects and non-destructive testing methods.

The Chapter also inaugurated its third student chapter at the college. The student chapter will provide opportunities for metallurgical, mechanical and production engineering students to understand the latest developments in the world of materials, the honorary secretary of IIM, Tiruchi N. Rajasekaran, said.

Inaugurating the chapter in the presence of principal M.A. Maluk Mohamed, the chairman of IIM, Tiruchi, V. Thiagarajan, said knowledge on materials was a basic requirement for any aspiring engineer.

Presiding over, S. Karunakaran, vice-chairman, said the chapter would facilitate development of skills and knowledge.

The Seshasayee Institute of Technology celebrated its Annual Day recently.

Addressing the students, T.R. Sivaraman, honorary secretary of the Management Committee emphasised discipline for scaling greater heights. Principal S. Sangapillai presented the annual report. The chief guest for the occasion, N. Venkatramani, managing partner, Manghalam Estates, an alumnus, honoured academic and extra-curricular achievers with prizes.

The institute also celebrated Alumni Day on the occasion. The alumni have created several endowments to honour meritorious and economically backward students.
