Q & A

Delve into aquaculture studies

We are interested in aquaculture. Can you guide us about studies in this field and starting a small aquaculture centre?

via Email Mandya

It is wonderful to find that people like you are interested in a discipline that not many would like to focus on. In Bangalore, you could approach the Centre for Studies in Aquaculture, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) ( www.uasbng.kar.nic.in), and build a career. If you are willing to move out of Bangalore, there are many institutions that can help you out. Under the aegis of Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) ( www.icar.org.in/) you will be able to get a list of institutes that are dealing with this highly specialised area. You could also contact the Central Institute of Brackish Water Aquaculture, Chennai (Email: ciba@tn.nic.in) and get further clarifications.

If you pursue programmes from institutions that function under ICAR, you will get a bank loan for starting an aquaculture centre. Aquaculture is the cultivation of the natural produce of water (such as fish or shellfish, algae and other aquatic organisms). The term is distinguished from fishing by the idea of active human effort in maintaining or increasing the species involved, as opposed to simply taking them from the wild.

Subsets of aquaculture include mariculture (aquaculture in the ocean); algaculture (the production of kelp/seaweed and other algae); fish farming (the raising of catfish and tilapia in freshwater ponds or salmon in marine ponds); and the growing of cultured pearls (Wikipedia).

You should contact the Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation (KSSIDC), a Government undertaking, which will provide the inputs for you to start a small enterprise at Industrial Estate, Rajajinagar, West of Chord Road, Bangalore-44, Ph: 23407011–25. Email: cmp.kssidc.karbng@

Ambitious

I have been working in a government organisation for the past nine years after completing my degree. I took admission in Alagappa University, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, for M.A. in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, a two-year distance education programme, which I completed in 2004. The promotion opportunities in my organisation are at a standstill. I want to join a PSU bank or get a better posting in a Government organisation. But my application gets rejected. I want to know if my PG qualification is recognised by the Government. Should I pursue another PG programme to better my career? I am really confused.

The Alagappa University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and all State Governments for purposes of employment. You have to keep one aspect in mind: banks and Government departments call for positions as and when the requirement arises. Hence, it is not an automatic recruitment process.

The Government job may provide you enough cushioning and comfort. You seem to fall into the category of those who have accepted it but feel that you potential is not being put to full use. Besides, you need to apply through the proper channel so that your application is accepted by the authorities.

If you are interested in opportunities in the private sector, you would surely do well with the attitudes that you possess.

Psychology

Can a science graduate apply for Post-Graduation in Psychology under distance education of Annamalai University or any other University? Should I study any other courses to be eligible to practise as a counsellor or psychologist after taking M.A./M.Sc.?

Haider Naqvi

via Email Bangalore

Annamalai University ( www.annamalaiuniversity.ac.in) has provided you a wonderful opportunity to pursue M.Sc in Applied Psychology by Distance Learning. It has placed papers of relevance to the requirements of a counsellor in the two-year programme.

In the first year of study, you will be reading papers such as Advanced General Psychology, Psychological Statistics and Research Methods, Advanced Social Psychology, Life Span Psychology and Experimental Psychology (practical paper). The second year of study will take you through two fields of specialisation (learner opts for one) viz.,

Group A: Theories of Personality, Psychopathology, Health Psychology, Psychotherapeutics and Experimental Psychology (Practical).

Group B: HRD, Organisational Behaviour, Industrial Psychology, Organizational Counselling and Experimental Psychology (Practical).

Depending on your interest you can select the group and get to know psychology better. The best way to practice as a psychologist is to join an organisation in the Human Resources field and implement whatever you have learnt. For this, you will have to take up the various issues involved in Organizational Behaviour.

IGNOU programme

Can I enrol for the B.Ed (Distance Programme) of the Indira Gandhi National Open University? I work as a teacher in an aided school. I have TCH qualification and have a Master’s degree in Arts.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is the right choice for a person like you. The School of Education (SOE) of IGNOU offers the now popular Bachelor in Education (Distance Learning programme) for in-service teachers with a minimum of two years of service all over India. You can get in touch with Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Centre, 293, 39th Cross, 8th Block, Jayanagar, Bangalore-560 083. Ph: 26657376, 26641904, 26654747, 26644848 and get all the details.

The programme is unique as it supports the cause of teacher-educator to such an extent that the teacher is able to ‘unlearn’ a lot of aspects through the eight courses that are on offer over two years. The eight courses include two teaching methodologies in English, Hindi, Science, Social Studies and Mathematics. Besides this, you will have School Based Activities (SBA) and Workshop Based Activities (WBA) that will help you to become a better teacher.

You will have to write an entrance test and qualify for admission. We at EducationPlus would like to inform you that being a teacher in an aided school, it is better to take permission from your employer by informing them that the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)-approved programme is useful for your promotions and increments in the future.

I am a computer engineer in a private sector scientific organisation. I have about two years of experience in aviation. Is it feasible for me to pursue MBA in Aviation Management in RMIT, Australia? Please spell out the career opportunities on completion of the 18-month programme.

Dinesh Pakianatha

via Email Kasargod

The MBA (Aviation Management) of RMIT University ( www.rmit.edu.au) aims to integrate the skills required to analyse and implement creative solutions, enhance leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and to develop managers able to achieve results in an industry characterised by global competition, and driven by rapidly changing market forces. In fact, this has been considered as a unique programme which will help the learner to juxtapose theory and practice with élan.

The programme at RMIT is divided into three stages, each of one semester duration (campus study mode).

Stage One (Graduate Certificate) consists of courses (subjects) which give an overview of the aviation industry.

Stage Two (Graduate Diploma) offers the opportunity to continue to develop business skills while it addresses the theme of Management Skills Development and emphasises the personal development of the candidates on the premise that by understanding their own development process, they are better able to facilitate the development of individuals who work for and with them.

Stage Three (Master’s) further develops the theme of air transport industry specialisation, while still including the development of personal competencies.

Candidates undertake an aviation research project which is jointly supervised by an RMIT staff member and, where possible, an industry supervisor. The opportunities in the field of aviation management are plenty and you can work in the private sector or the Government.
