National conference on ‘Nanomaterials’

The Department of Physics of Karunya University organised a National Conference on ‘Nanomaterials.’ John Philip, Head, Smart materials, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, was the chief guest. He said research in nanomaterials was interdisciplinary and nanomaterials found applications from electronics to medicine. The conference had sessions on nanofilms, nanobiomaterials, nano composites, nano technology, nanomedicine and nanoparticles. R.N.Emerson, Convener, said over 200 people participated. Anne Mary Fernandez, Registrar, Karunya University released the proceedings of the conference.

The Department of Women’s Studies of Bharathiar University organised a talk on “Elimination of Suppression of Women.” M.Jeyarathnam, Director of the Women’s Study Centre, spoke about the extension activities undertaken by the department in order to create awareness about legal rights, child rights, gender sensitisation, nutrition, fitness and other issues relevant to women.

The Department of Civil Engineering, VLB Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology organised a national-level technical symposium ‘Landmark ’08.’ More than 100 papers from various institutions were received. G.S.Palani, Scienties, Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai, spoke on simulation and dynamic studies. The symposium included paper presentation contests, technical quiz, and model making contest.

RVS College of Arts and Science recently inaugurated the Academic Activities of the School of Commerce for the year 2008-09. R.Maheshkumar, Advocate, Mahesh Associates was the chief guest. He spoke to the students on polishing their skills, identify their talents and work on improving them.

The ‘kalaivizha’ celebrations of Avinashilingam University were held recently. D.Srinivasan, Managing Director, Sri Annapoorna Gowrishankar Group of Hotels, was the chief guest. He said sponsorships and awards would be given to those students who contributed to the catering department by making innovative foods beneficial to the society.

Sri Ramakrishna Hospital organised a series of programmes on cancer awareness in Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris districts. The hospital, in collaboration with the students of national service scheme of Sri Krishna College of Arts and Science, organised breast cancer awareness camps in Kovaipudur Pirivu, VLB Nagar, B.K.Pudur, Myikal, Sugunapuram, and Kulathupalayam.

The Commerce Department of Rathinam College of Arts and Science inaugurated the Department Association called ‘ACE.’ R.Ranganathan, Director, Department of Management, CBM College, Coimbatore was the chief guest. He spoke about the need to develop managerial skills among the students.

Ranganathan Engineering College received the ISO certification recently. R.Chandrasekhar, Advisor, Bharathiar School of Management, P.Tamilarasi Murugesan, Secretary, Ranganathen Engieering College, R.Murugesan, Chairman of College, and S.S.Ramakrishnan, Principal of college took part.

The Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science, organised a national seminar on “Exploring Biosciences.” K.P.Gopinath, Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, was the chief guest. He spoke about cell cloning, its importance and ethical issues.

The School of Biotechnology of Dr.G.R.Damodaran College of Science organised ‘Bio Focuz,’ an inter-school bioscience meet. Sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology and National Council for Science and Technology, the programme included essay writing, poster presentation, model display and painting contests, all related to biosciences.

The NSS unit of PSG College of Arts and Science celebrated NSS Day. The celebrations included personality development workshop, an interface programme on “Knowledge Empowerment and Career Opportunities” and a blood and eye check up camp.

The Centre for University and Industry Collaboration, Anna University, Chennai, in collaboration with Wipro, organised a training programme for the faculty of engineering colleges.

The first of the programme was held at Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Technology. The aim of the programme is to empower the faculty members with skills that could be passed on to the young graduates.

SNMV College of Arts and Science conducted an orientation programme for final year undergraduate and post graduate students for placement training.

PSG College of Nursing hosted the south-level nursing quiz competition recently. Mohamed Ali, Block Medical Officer, Local Health Authority, Thudiyalur, was the chief guest. He spoke about the basic qualities nurses required. Over 20 colleges from Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, took part.

The Department of English of K.G.College of Arts and Science organised a guest lecture on “Communication Skills” for second year students.

The sessions included a presentation on “telephone skills,” “listening skills,” and “soft skills.”
