M.Tech. computer science


I am a 6th semester B.Tech. computer science and engineering student. I am planning to appear for GATE next year. Please let me know about the institutes and colleges offering M.Tech. courses in computer science and engineering and related branches.

Meritorious engineering graduates and final-year BE, B.Tech. students could qualify the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission to ME or M.Tech. programmes and secure scholarships.

Almost all engineering colleges and institutes admit students to M.Tech. programmes based on GATE score. In the absence of sufficient GATE-qualified applicants, others will be considered.

Prominent institutes

The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) conducts an M.Tech. programme in computer science and engineering (two years, four semesters). Those who have passed B.Tech. computer science and engineering or equivalent with a valid GATE score are eligible for admission.

B.Tech. holders in information technology or first-class MCA holders with a valid GATE score in computer science and engineering are also eligible. Selection is based on the GATE score.

•Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mardras, Chennai ( www.gate.iitm.ac.in)

Entry qualification is B.Tech. computer science and engineering or equivalent with a valid GATE score. Selection based on GATE score.

•IIT Kanpur ( www.iitk.ac.in).

Entry qualification is BE or B.Tech. in computer science and engineering with a valid GATE or UGC-CSIR (University Grants Commission-Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) score.

•IIT Kharagpur ( www.iitkgp.ernet.in/

GATE qualified meritorious graduates in computer science and engineering are eligible for admission. Selection based on GATE score.

•Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, ( www.iisc.ernet.in) conducts an ME programme in computer science and engineering. BE or B.Tech. holders in computer science and engineering with at least a second class are eligible to apply. Selection based on GATE score only.

•Amritha School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwavidyapeetham, Ettimadai, Coimbatore – 641 105 ( www.amrita.edu) offers an M.Tech. computer vision and image processing course. Entry qualification is BE or B.Tech. in computer science and engineering with at least 60 per cent marks. Applicants with GATE score will be given preference). Admission is based on an entrance test conducted by the Amrita School of Engineering.

•Birla Institute of Technology (Deemed University) Ranchi ( www.bitmesra.ac.in) offers M.Tech. in computer science. Students with valid GATE score will be eligible for admission.

•Bharath University, Chennai ( www.bharathuniv.ac.in) – M.Tech. •Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (deemed university), Bhubaneswar – M.Tech.

Eligibility first class BE or B.Tech. in computer science and engineering. Admission based on an entrance test.

•Viswesvaraya Technological University, Balgaum ( www.vtu.ac.in) conducts M.Tech. in computer engineering or computer science and engineering.

•National Institute of Technology Warangal offers M.Tech.

Admission based on GATE score.

•Pondicherry University ( www.pondiuniv.org) – M.Tech.

Selection based on an entrance test conducted by the university.

•Anna university, Chennai, provides a single window system for admission (Tamil Nadu Common Admissions) to ME or M.Tech programmes in Anna University, government, government-aided and self-financing engineering colleges. The categories for admission under the system are GATE qualified, non-GATE and sponsorship for regular or self-supporting fulltime programmes. For more details, visit www.annauniv.edu.

Other related options

Meritorious graduates in computer science and engineering can also opt for computer and information science, software engineering, nanotechnology, information technology, industrial engineering and so on for postgraduate-level programmes.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), Kochi – 682 022 conducts M.Tech. computer and information science and M.Tech. software engineering courses. First-class B.Tech. holders in computer science or information technology are eligible for admission. Selection is based on GATE score.

Those who do not possess GATE qualification will be considered in the absence of GATE-qualified applicants. ( www.cusat.nic.in.)

The College of Engineering, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram – 695016, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, and Rajiv Ghandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam, offer M.Tech. mechanical with industrial engineering or industrial engineering and management as specialisation options.

For M.Tech. in industrial engineering management, B.Tech. holders in any engineering discipline will be considered for admission. Applicants should have a valid GATE score.

The National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai – 400 087 ( www.nitie.edu) offers postgraduate diploma in industrial engineering. First-class B.Tech. holders in any discipline with valid GATE score are eligible for admission.

Some institutes offer M.Tech. nanotechnology programmes. The Amity Institute of Nanotechnology, Noida, is a notable centre in the private sector offering M.Tech. in nanotechnology. Meritorious B.Tech computer science and engineering graduates are eligible for admission.

The school of Information Technology of IIT Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Kerala (IIITMK) ( www.iiitmk.ac.in) offer postgraduate diploma programmes in information technology.

Graduates in any engineering branch with 60 per cent marks are eligible for admission. Selection based on an entrance test.

MBA programmes

PG programme in management or MBA is another suitable option for meritorious engineering graduates. Atal Bihari Vajpayee - Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (ABV-IIITM), Gwalior– 474003 ( www.iiitm.ac.in) offers MBA with specialisation in IT, IT-enabled services, e-governance and so on, which is best suited for computer science engineering or IT engineering graduates.
