The Wigan Aptitude Test (WAT) measures the academic abilities needed to succeed in education. It is administered by the British Council. The WAT consists of three main components:

General Aptitude Test (GAT): This section is applicable to all students and designed to identify if they are in a position to face the rigour of the education process.

M.Tech in distance mode

I am B-level certified from DOEACC Society, and working in a software firm for the past three years. For furthering my qualification and career I want to pursue the M.Tech by Distance/Correspondence course. Which universities provide opportunities for this type of education? I have found that many deemed universities and other institutes are providing programmes to suit the requirements of the working people.

Prakash Rao

via e-mail, Mysore

B-Level is a post-graduate qualification equivalent to the Master of Computer Applications (MCA). Since you are already working in the Information Technology (IT) space, you can contact your Unit HR for institutional tie-up so that you could pursue the programme of your choice in your organisation itself. Infosys, Wipro, Satyam and other IT and ITES companies have a tie-up with BITS, Pilani, and leading management institutes.

Alternatively, you can contact DOEACC ( www.doeacc.edu.in) which is successfully running the C-Level programme which is on a par with M.Tech. Besides the DOEACC, you can pursue M.Tech from the following deemed-to-be universities (recognised by the University Grants Commission and the HRD Ministry):

Vinayaka Missions Research Foundation ( www.vmrfdu.ac.in) which offers the two-year Master of Technology/Master of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering (Course Code: 952) through the distance education mode. You can contact the Head of the Department and get the full details of the programme.

The Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute which offers M.Tech on a part-time basis through its off campus centre, Deccan Institute of Advanced Studies ( www.diasindia.org), and also the M.S. by Research.

I would like my daughter to pursue a career in sciences, especially genetics, and would like her to join a good school in the U.S. for the Bachelor education. How should I help my daughter prepare for taking the SAT? Are there any SAT preparation schools in Bangalore? Which schools in the U.S. and in India offer courses in genetics, microbiology, and biotechnology?

Audrey

via e-mail, Bangalore

It is wonderful to start preparation early on in one’s life. In fact, this will help one to prepare well and plan accordingly. To begin with, your daughter should first take the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology (PCMB) combination to get to the best of programmes.

The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardised test for college admissions in the U.S. It is administered by the private Educational Testing Service (ETS) ( www.ets.org) in the U.S. and is developed, published and scored by the College Board.

The SAT consists of three major sections: Mathematics, Critical Reading and Writing. The major sections are further divided. The paper consists of essay and multiple choice questions. The multiple choice questions have five answers as a choice. The test lasts for 3 hours and 45 minutes and has an essay component for 25 minutes.

Subject tests are designed to measure your knowledge and skills in particular areas, as well as your ability to apply that knowledge. The tests are independent of any particular textbook or method of instruction. The content evolves to reflect current trends in high school curricula, but the types of questions change little from year to year. SAT conducts subject test in the following areas: English (Literature), History and Social Studies, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics).

For more information and application form, you can contact: Prometric Testing Private Limited, 2nd Floor, DFL Infinity Tower- A, Sector 25, Phase II, DFL City, Gurgaon, Haryana-122002. Ph: 0124-5147700.

The IISc’s Department of Metallurgy was established in 1945 and is dedicated to the advancement of education and research in metallurgy and materials engineering. It had initiated teaching programmes at the bachelor’s degree level and master’s degree level in 1947 and 1964 respectively.

The department has been recognised as a “Centre for Advanced Study” by the University Grants Commission since 1990. You can contact the Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy, and get to know the area of study better.

I completed PUC (science) and then did a Diploma in Electronics & Communication Engineering. I want to know whether I am eligible for joining Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM).

Raghuveer M.

via e-mail, Hubli

Any diploma holder will always think of getting into a good job and benefit from the same. One alternative would be to pursue the B.E or B.Tech degree for which you get exemption of one year (two semesters). Diploma students have excelled because of the practical background they have had at the polytechnic. You should think of pursuing the B.E or the B.Tech programmes. Some of the engineering colleges do offer seats for the students who have passed the diploma examinations.

Pursuing PGDBM may not be a good option now. However, if you want to pursue it, opt for Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL), Pune, on the distance learning format. This will give you an edge over others. Pursuing a technical qualification will help you.
