There are several higher study options for meritorious graduates in English language and literature, such as journalism and mass communication; management; tourism administration; law; international relations; linguistics; communication management; film editing and direction; visual communication; and library and information science. You can choose any of the courses that suit your aptitude and interest.

If you have a flair for writing, communication skills and the reading habit, journalism or mass communication is a good choice. Universities offer Master of Journalism (MJ); Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ); MA communication; Master of Communication Studies (MCS); Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC); and Master of Mass Communication (MMC) courses.

Postgraduate diploma courses in journalism are conducted by institutes, universities, press clubs, press academies and so on. Graduates in any discipline are eligible for admission.

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, provides modern facilities to study journalism, including radio and television journalism.

Those who pass the master’s degree or postgraduate diploma in journalism or mass communication can find jobs as sub-editors, reporters or correspondents in the print and electronic media or as assistant information officers and public relations officers in the government’s information services, public relations departments and so on. Jobs can be found with web portals also.

The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, offers M.A. media and communication and M.A. English (media and communication) courses. The course content includes scripting for radio and television; radio and television productions; English for writing in newspapers; business writing; oral communication and presentation skills; educational technology; multimedia; visual communication; media in communication and so on. Meritorious graduates in English language and literature are eligible for admission.

Management courses, such as the Master of Business Administration and Master of Financial Control programmes and the postgraduate diploma programmes, conducted by leading institutes and universities are good options. The MBA tourism course, offered by a few universities, is another suitable option. There are also MBA airline and airport management programmes and the postgraduate diploma in management (tourism and travel).

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Bharathidasan Institute of Management and Xavier Labour Relations Institutes are some of the leading institutions that can be chosen for higher studies in management. Some of the Indian Institutes of Technology also conduct MBA courses.

The Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad - 380 058 ( www.mica-india.net), offers a postgraduate diploma course in communication management, which aims at turning students into high-calibre professionals in communication management for careers in brand marketing, advertising media and marketing research. Admission is based on the score in the Common Admission Test of the IIMs, group discussion and personal interview.

If interested, you can choose the M.A. cinema and television course conducted by St. Joseph College of Communication, Changanassery ( www.sjcc.in), an affiliated college of Mahatma Gandhi University. You can also get trained in medical transcription or technical writing and be a medical transcriptionist or technical writer.

Linguistics is the scientific study of languages. It deals with the structure and development of a language and its relationship to other languages. Linguistics also cover the study of sound, structure, meaning and functions of language. Almost all central and other leading universities in India offer master’s, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in linguistics. Those having a degree in any discipline with at least 45-50 per cent marks may apply for the master’s course.

The Centre of Linguistics of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, is one of the leading centres for linguistics and language studies in India. The centre focuses on core areas such as phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax, as well as those in interdisciplinary language studies, such as neuro-cognitive linguistics and sociolinguistics. The M.A. programme here covers theoretical and applied linguistics. Selection is based on a national-level entrance test and interview. M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes are also offered here.

The University of Hyderabad offers M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme in applied linguistics. Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai ( www.mkuniversity.org); Mysore University, Mysore; and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; offer the M.A. course.

Those obtaining higher qualifications in linguistics can become linguists and are eligible to work as audiologists; newsreaders; interpreters; psycholinguists; lexicographers; content and copy writers; editors; tour operators; and so on. Teaching is another career option. A postgraduate in linguistics with technical expertise can get good jobs in software companies. An upcoming field for those well-versed in linguistics is the banking and financial services sector.
