MSIT calling

R. RAVIKANTH REDDY

The programme aims at churning out high quality professionals for IT and ITES

With software industry experiencing a boom over the years the need for professionals has increased many folds. While engineering graduates bagged the chunk of software jobs, students coming from non-engineering backgrounds missed out on the growth due to lack of technical skills.

Universities and private organisations designed courses to plug this gap and the most successful among them has been the Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT).

The programme aims at churning out high quality all-round professionals for IT and IT-enabled services. Towards this end, the curriculum grooms them in IT and specialised domains along with soft skills. It has been specially designed to provide industry specialists who have hands-on experience, understand business needs, work patterns and deadline pressures of the corporate environment.

Consortium

The MSIT programme has been designed by a consortium of universities along with Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh, US and Consortium of Institutions of Higher Learning (CIHL). Its success can be rated given the 100 per cent placement record since its launch in 2004. “It’s like getting a US degree sitting in India,” says Srinivasa Rao Meda, professor of Computer Science in JNTU and Dean, CIHL.

The course is open to B.Tech or B.E graduates or those with a PG degree in Mathematics or Statistics. The Stage I of admission consists of Graduate Aptitude Test (GAT). Only those candidates qualifying in stage I will be called for stage II of the entrance test consisting of Listening Comprehension and those qualifying in this stage will be called for counselling on the same day.

Candidates qualifying in stage I and stage II will join the preparatory course of eight weeks duration. Only those students who complete the preparatory course successfully will be allowed to join the main MSIT programme.

Presently, MSIT programme is being offered at the MSIT Division, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad and the School of IT, JNT University, Hyderabad.

Prof. Srinivasa Rao says the curriculum focuses on the real world problems and is woven around a contextual story inspired from real-world scenarios. Students gather hands-on experience by working on projects encompassing the concepts of technology they learn. Each course is handled by a mentor who is responsible for designing, developing, delivering, evaluating work products, training, and monitoring.

Each student is given a laptop and a dedicated work place, high speed Internet and 24x7 lab facility. The class is divided into teams of 3 to 5 students. The students divide the task into sub-tasks, assign tasks among themselves, prepare schedules and get them reviewed by the mentor. Once the mentor accepts the schedules, the team should implement the task and submit the deliverables to the mentor.

Digital lectures supplemented by renowned faculty of various universities across the world give the students an edge over their peers. Prof. Rao said teaching assistantships are also available to the second year students. He said that emphasis is laid on soft skills and they have tied-up with CNK Management Ltd, an expert organisation in corporate soft skills training that provides the digital content for the soft skills courses.

This year authorities are planning for an intake of 140 students each at the two learning centres in IIIT and JNTU. For the convenience of the students a walk-in entrance facility has been created where the students have an opportunity to take the MSIT entrance exam, whenever they are confident of taking the exam.

It will be conducted from Thursday to Sunday till May 24 at Eduquity Career Technologies Pvt Ltd, 403, 4th Floor, Myhome Sarovar Plaza, Behind British Library, Secretariat road, Hyderabad-63. Details can be had on 040-23243010.

They need to carry certificates of their eligibility degree, DD of Rs. 500 in favour of ‘CIHL’, payable at Hyderabad, copy of SSC or equivalent certificate apart from copies of their educational certificates which will help them in filling up the application form at the venue.

Entrance

Apart from walk-in entrance, there is an entrance test conducted by Eduquity at Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Vishakapatnam and Warangal from May 25 onwards. Candidates can apply online also by logging into www.msitprogram.net.
