Enterprising: A student doing a part-time job at a restaurant.
Summer is no more about lazing around and playing with your friends. Blame it either on rising awareness levels or the urge in youngsters to feel in control of their lives; more and more students are taking to summer jobs or internships during their vacations.
The Hindu EducationPlus spoke to students from different educational backgrounds and different colleges in the city to find out what their idea of an ideal vacation is.
Though some confessed that they were looking forward to waking up late and spending more time in front of the idiot box, most of them thought that beyond a point they need to mould some meaning into their break. Here’s what students had to say:
Gagan Jeevagan (Mechanical Engineering 2nd year, M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology): It’s an excellent idea. Doing nothing can be very boring actually. We have barely one-and-a half to two months of leave, so we try to cramp in as much activity as we can. Last semester, I worked for an event management company. It’s a great, brilliant experience.
Getting up late and watching TV is fun but afterwards that also gets really boring. Some of my classmates want to pursue their MBA, so then you can get a basic idea of the stuff. I want to pursue my MBA, so I don’t really want an industrial training experience.
I am part of a theatre group ‘Vayu’, which is what I will be doing most of this summer. It is only about keeping yourself engaged and active through the summer.
Nitish Shroff (Industrial Engineering 1st year, M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology): I think that it’s a great thing to intern with a company. As far as education is concerned we hardly get any practical experience. Am doing an internship with an event management company.
When companies comes for placement they look out for students who work and get a hands-on-experience. As far as industrial training goes, most of us don’t know how to approach a company and companies ask for more time.
More than placements, having a summer job is about doing stuff practically and learning how to work in a team. Part-time promotional jobs and even odd jobs can be a lot of fun and even a learning experience.
Roshni Joseph (second year B.A., St. Joseph’s College): I would like to do an internship because when you’re going through your college education there is a limit to what you’re learning. Suddenly it dawns on you that you do not have an idea of how the world works. Internship helps you gain insight and information whether you want to study further or go straight into the job. It gives you an edge over others.
Having been in a work environment and an idea of how to work in a group makes you a better candidate when you face an interview panel. One of the other reasons for me is that I can end up saving.
Deekshith Thimmaiah (second year B.A., Christ College): This summer I am not looking at internships because I am already working. I have been working for quite sometime for a BPO. A lot of companies may offer part time jobs and taking that up helps you gain a sense of independence.
A couple of my friends are looking for summer internships and everyone is looking for either some sort of independence or experience. It is certainly a good thing to do.
Sneha Sikand (second year B.A., Mount Carmel College): This summer, I will be going to Mumbai to do my internship at an advertising agency. Most of my friends are also going to be doing their internships since it is part of our course.
I would have looked for a job even if it was not included in my degree programme. However, I would have had difficulty in deciding on the area of work. I think that working in the summer is a good way to spend the vacation. It keeps one busy and at the end of it, one gets to learn something. It will add weight to the CV and helps when one is entering the market after studies.
