Shaastra 2007 to unfold

It aims to foster technical innovation

INNOVATIVE: Students live it up at a fest

Shaastra, the annual technical festival of IIT-Madras, will be held from October 3 to 7 this year. The largest technical festival of its kind in India, it also has the distinction of being the only ISO 9001:2000 certified student-organised event in the world.

Shaastra aims to foster technical innovation and encourage participants to come up with implementable solutions to technical problems. Prize money above Rs. 10 lakh is on offer this year. True to its message, ‘Engineering is Fun’, Shaastra has a host of events lined up.

Cutting edge

At the Open House, individual engineering departments of IIT-Madras will showcase their cutting edge technology and research. In Spirit of Engineering, students will craft engineering entities from scratch.

Workshops demonstrating a wide vista of concepts with hands-on experience and lectures are also part of the show. Of particular interest is the Chandrayaan workshop which will feature lectures on the making of Chandrayaan, India’s first moon mission, all set for launch in February next year.

The four-hour panel discussion will feature space scientists such as K. Kasturirangan, Jayati Dutta and Annadurai from ISRO, India’s first cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma and writer Jayant Narlikar.

Meet Nobel laureates

A series of video conferences are also planned with Nobel laureates such as Harold Kroto (Chemistry, 1996) and John Mather, American astrophysicist from NASA (Physics, 2006) and also Narendra Karmakar, who is building the world’s fastest super computer.

Popular events include Robowars, The Ultimate Engineer, Robotics, The Ignobel Prizes that recognise research projects that ‘first make people laugh and think’, Science Fiction Writing, Puzzle Championships and on-the spot events such as Project X, Junkyard Wars, Quick Fix, Aesthetique, IDP(Industry Defined Problems), Engenious, Blueprint, Fire n ICE, Online Hacking Challenge and Online Math Modelling.

A not-to-be-missed event would be the Shaastra Main Quiz, apart from business skill events such as Breakthrough and Bull’s Eye.

The events will also focus on creating environmental awareness such as conservation of paper and saving energy.

The principal sponsor is Bosch and co-sponsors are Microsoft, Google, Autodesk, Siemens and GE. Events are sponsored by Intuit, Shell, Alcatel-Lucent, Invensys, IBM, TVS and Schlumberger.
