Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, recently said in Parliament that 85 applications to set up new medical colleges across the country had been received for the academic year 2018-19.

In this context, The Hindu takes a look at the existing number of government and private medical colleges in each state.

Data shows that there are a higher number of medical colleges in South India. South Indian states Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana account for 44% of UG seats and 39% of PG seats.
