ATHLETICS

Coleman expected to shine at US trials

The US trials on Thursday will decide who will be competing at the upcoming World Championships for the US.

While sprinter Justin Gatlin has been Jamaican Usain Bolt’s long-standing rival, his qualification this time around cannot be taken for granted. For 21-year-old prodigy Christian Coleman, who recently registered a world-leading 9.82 seconds for the fastest time this season, is expected to make his mark.

TENNIS

Muguruza stumbles through; Murray falls

Garbine Muguruza was taken to three sets, but eventually prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 against Elizaveta Kulichkova in the Aegon Classic, her first encounter since failing to defend her French Open title.

Wimbledon’s defending champion and world no. 1 Andy Murray, meanwhile, had a major hiccup in his preparation for the Wimbledon as he fell against lucky loser Jordan Thompson at the Queen’s club.
