Twists and turns before match ends in a draw

At the start of the fifth day of the first Test in Kolkata, Suranga Lakmal bowled brilliantly, giving Sri Lanka the chance to pull off their first Test victory in Indian soil.

India’s skipper Virat Kohli ensured that there was no chance for that, as he first saw off the storm and then played some strokes to register his 18th Test century and set a target of 231 for the visitors to win the Test.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami then struck terror in Sri Lankan hearts as the former picked four wickets and the latter two. With Sri Lanka’s score reading 75 for seven, light came to their rescue as bad light ended the day’s play, with the contest finishing as a draw.

Football

Icardi powers Inter to second

On a night when six-time defending champions Juventus slumped to a shock 3-2 defeat against Sampdoria, Mauro Icardi scored with two headers to help Inter Milan beat Atalanta 2-0.

The victory allowed Inter to move to second in Serie A with 33 points, two behind leaders Napoli after 13 matches this season.

Grigor Dimitrov registered the biggest win of his career, defeating David Goffin 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the final to lift the ATP World Tour Finals title.
