Wipro has indicated its keenness to invest around Rs.700 crore in a new facility in West Bengal, Finance Minister Amit Mitra said.

Wipro Chairman Azim Premji met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the State Secretariat on Wednesday and discussed potential investments as well as e-governance projects, according to Mr. Mitra who was also present during the meeting.

Explaining Mr. Premji's refusal to make any comment before the press, Mr. Mitra said “he will speak only when the projects come to fruition.”

He said that while Wipro's existing project had created employment for 7,500 people, the proposed second project would create employment of around 15,000.

Government officials said that some 50 acres had already been allotted to Wipro and the project announced in 2009, was stalled due to paucity of infrastructure like approach roads. Many of those issues had been addressed since then and the land was now ready for physical possession, they said.

Mr. Mitra said that Wipro had also offered its help to work in the government domain through public private partnership projects relating to e-governance.

He said Wipro worked with seven States on similar projects in which the National Informatics Centre (NIC) was also involved. “The aim was to make government-work seamless, modern and paperless.”
