The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) and the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) on Friday underlined the need to adopt information and communication technology (ICT) in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to increase their efficiency and productivity.
In a joint report titled — A roadmap of ICT adoption in the Indian manufacturing sector — the two organisations said the ICT adoption could act as a catalyst for increasing the efficiency of the manufacturing sector. The report also identified shared responsibilities between the government, technology companies, industry associations, academia, and the manufacturing firms for enhancing ICT adoption.
“Adoption of ICT among the firms surveyed was high for basic services like finance and accounting, but was limited for a higher level of solutions, like enterprise resource planning (ERP) and manufacturing processes. MSMEs in India spent about one per cent of their revenues on IT, while the global average stood at about 4.5 per cent,” said Nasscom President Som Mittal. According to NMCC Chairman V. Krishnamurthy, “the report will result in collaborations between firms belonging to the IT and manufacturing sectors for the mutual benefits of firms in both sectors. We also hope that the MSME sector can emulate the success of the larger Indian auto sector by successfully adopting ICT to its benefits.”
