The rupee fell 25 paise to 49.75 against the US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on Monday following fresh demand from importers for the American currency.

Forex dealers said weakness in euro and other Asian currencies against the dollar overseas also weighed on the rupee’s value.

Weak opening in the equity market and fresh demand for the US currency put pressure on the rupee, they said.

The rupee had lost 29 paise to close at three-week low of 49.50/51 against the US currency on sustained dollar demand from importers on Friday as well.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex fell by 163.10 points, or 0.92 per cent, at 17,473.89 in early trade.
