After taking lead in the installation of 727 MW power plant at Palatana in south Tripura, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is set to strike out an arrangement with the state government to set up a fertiliser plant. Both are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) sometime next month.
Industry and Commerce Minister Jitendra Choudhury told reporters in Agartala that the MoU could be signed during the visit of Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC, Sudhir Basudeva, on April 9. “Though state government and the ONGC are major partners, another farm could have stake in the project”, he said.
The Tripura government has long been eying on setting up a fertiliser manufacturing unit to take advantage of huge gas reserves in the State. Several companies including the TATA group had shown interest, but backed out before the project could make headway.
Officials said the fertiliser factory will be commissioned in Kumarghat sub-division of Unakoti district in north Tripura.
Per day exploration of gas in Tripura is estimated at 2.8 million standard cubic metre or mmscmd. Half of the production is marked for the combined cycle Palatana power project which is now put on trial basis before going for final commissioning.
