NTPC will examine the feasibility of setting up a coal based power plant in Bangladesh as part of the enhanced bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
High-level team
A high-level NTPC technical team would be visiting Bangladesh shortly to explore the possibility of setting up the plant which could be in the region of 500-1,000 MW. Under the initial plan, power generated from the plant will be evacuated to India through a transmission network to be developed by the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (PGCIL).
NTPC and the Bangladesh Power Development Board will jointly develop the project. Details relating to the equity pattern are being worked out and it is likely that NTPC would get the management control besides 49 per cent stake in the power plant. The proposed plant will be fired by imported coal.
In January, a delegation from Bangladesh had extended invitations to Indian power companies such as NTPC, PGCIL and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. to set up power plants in the neighbouring country.
At present, Bangladesh has a power generation capacity of 5,000 MW, of which 83 per cent is gas-based.
