Export of spices and their products from India have registered an increase of four per cent in volume and 19 per cent in terms of value in April-Feb 2010—11.
In dollar terms, the rise in exports is 24 per cent.
A total of 4,71,165 tonnes of spices and spice products valued at Rs 6,030.74 crore ($ 1323.28 million) were exported as against 4,53,495 tonnes (Rs 5,058.26 crore) in April-February 2009-10, a spices board press release said today.
The spices exports during the period also surpassed last year’s exports of Rs 5,560.50 crore.
Exports of chilli, ginger, fennel, garlic and other spices such as asafoetida and tamarind showed an increase both in volume and value during the period as compared to the corresponding period last year.
Exports of value added products spice oils and oleoresin and curry powder/paste also showed increase both in volume and value as compared to April-February 2009-10. However, in case of pepper, cardamom (large), turmeric and mint products the increase is in terms of value only.
Other spices like cardamom (small), coriander, cumin, celery, fenugreek, other seeds and nutmeg and mace increased both in terms of volume and value as compared to last year.
During April-February 2010-11, a total quantity of 16,600 tonnes of pepper valued at Rs 334.62 crore was exported as against 18,425 tonnes valued at Rs 293.00 crore of last year.
The unit value of pepper increased from Rs 159.02 per kg in 2009-10 to Rs 201.58 per kg in 2010-11. A total quantity of 865 tonnes of cardamom (small) valued at Rs 100.41 crore was exported as against 1765 tonnes valued at Rs 143.62 crore of last year.
In the case of cardamom (Small) the unit value increased from Rs 813.59 per kg in 2009-10 to Rs 1,160.84 per kg in 2010-11.
During the period, a total quantity of 2,18,500 tonnes of chilli valued at Rs 1,379.52 crore was exported as against 1,80,750 tonnes valued at Rs 1,156.57 crore, registering an increase of 21 per cent in quantity and 19 per cent in value.
During April- February 2010—11, 12,000 tonnes of ginger valued at Rs 77.29 crore was exported as against 5,100 tonnes valued at Rs 41.51 crore of last year.
Export of spice oils and oleoresins also increased to 6,800 tonnes valued at Rs 803.02 crore from 6,225 tonnes valued at Rs 651.68 crore of last year.
During April-February 2010-11, about 13,250 tonnes of curry powder/paste valued at Rs 178.76 crore was exported as against 13,100 tonnes (Rs 173.30 crore) during the same period a year ago.
Export of spices from India during April-February 2010-11 have already exceeded the target in terms of both quantity and value.
Compared to the spices export target of 4,65,000 tonnes valued at Rs 5,100.00 crore ($ 1125 million) fixed for the financial year 2010-11, the achievement of 471,165 tonnes valued at Rs 6,030.74 crore ($ 1323.28 million) during April-February 2010-11 is 101 per cent in terms of quantity and 118 per cent in rupee and dollar terms, the release said.
