The rupee today depreciated by 7 paise to 46.62 a dollar in early trade amid weak equity markets.

Dealers said weak equity markets pulled down the rupee.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, fell 76.18 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 18,378.76 points in opening trade.

The dollar’s gain against other major currencies also kept some pressure on the rupee.

The rupee had ended higher by 9 paise at 46.55/56 a dollar in the previous session on Wednesday. The forex market remained closed yesterday on account of ‘Parsi New Year’ .
