The Indian rupee depreciated by 16 paise to 44.52 a dollar in early trade today on fund outflows and the greenback’s gains overseas.
The rupee closed higher by 15 paise at its two-week high of 44.36 a dollar in the previous session.
Forex dealers said capital outflows and dollar strength against other Asian currencies weighed on the rupee sentiment.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, fell by 140.87 points, or 0.80 per cent to 17,417.84 points in opening trade today.
