The rupee today strengthened by four paise to 59.64 against the US dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, on selling of US currency by exporters.

Forex dealers said that besides dollar selling by exporters, a higher opening in domestic equity market helped the rupee to strengthen.

The rupee had lost 41 paise to close at new life-time low of 59.68 on Monday.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark index today recovered by 72.95 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 18,613.84 in early trade.
