The rupee on Thursday lost 25 paise to 55.72 against the U.S. dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market as the American currency gained strength against other currencies overseas.

Forex dealers said besides dollar’s gains against euro in the overseas markets, a weak opening in the stock market also put pressure on the local unit.

The rupee had strengthened by 18 paise to close at 55.47 against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday on robust capital inflows in the stock market and exporters selling the dollar.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex fell by 57.30 points, or 0.33 per cent, at 17,200.08 in early trade on Thursday.
