The Indian rupee strengthened by 5 paise to Rs 44.67 per U.S. dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Friday, largely in tandem with dollar weakness against other Asian currencies overseas.

The rupee had softened by two paise to close at 44.72/73 against the US currency in yesterday’s trade amid a weak domestic equity market and stray dollar demand from importers.

Forex dealers said dollar weakness against other currencies overseas mainly supported the Indian rupee.
