Cardamom exports at all-time high

Cardamom exports touched an all-time high of 3,900 tonnes valued at Rs.308.32 crore during April-January this fiscal, the Spices Board said on Friday. Shipments were 795 tonnes (Rs.91.56 crore) in the corresponding period in the previous year.

Cardamom (large) exports touched 710 tonnes at Rs.52.72 crore against the 645 tonnes (Rs.34.69 lakh). The unit value of cardamom (large) increased from Rs.537.87 to Rs.742.61 a kg during the period.

A total of 4.36 lakh tonnes of spices, valued at Rs.7,849.47 crore were exported during the periodan increase of 47 per cent.

In 2011, about 4.32 lakh tonnes of spices were exported valued at Rs.5,353.95 crore. Besides, there has been an increase in exports of value-added products and curry powder/pastes.

In the case of chilli, spice oils and oleoresins, the increase is in terms of value alone.

A total quantity of 22,300 tonnes of pepper, valued at Rs.720.78 crore was exported against about 14,950 tonnes (Rs.296.56 crore) during the same period in the previous year.
