Cardamom auctions continue to be marked by heavy arrivals and the average price is ruling over Rs.500 a kg, movements being range-bound since auctions restarted after Christmas.

Auctions at Bodinaikanur by Cardamom Planters' Association on Monday saw arrivals to the tune of 62 tonnes. Fifty-six tonnes were sold at an average price at Rs.459.57 a kg. Sunday's auctions by Kerala Cardamom Processing and Marketing Company, Thekkady, saw arrivals of 140.26 tonnes. The entire quantity was sold at an average price of Rs.492.76 a kg.

Total arrivals up to January 8 stands at 9,344 tonnes. Of this, 9,095 tonnes were sold at a weighted average price of Rs.562.85 a kg.

The heavy arrivals have been attributed to a good crop this season. Thanks to rains during the summer months in 2011, cardamom production has increased substantially this season.
