Japanese stocks opened lower Thursday following another night of heavy losses on Wall Street and European markets.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average had lost 130.35 points, or 1.44 per cent, to trade at 8,908.39 as of 9:22 am (0022 GMT) after falling more than 2 per cent at the opening.

The broader-based Topix index was down 8.77 points, or 1.13 per cent, at 767.96.

On Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 4.62 per cent amid renewed fears of European debt woes.

In Tokyo, on currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 76.83-84 yen, up slightly from Wednesday’s 5 pm quote of 76.68-72 yen.

The euro traded at 1.4137-4139 dollars, down from 1.4378-4379 dollars Wednesday, and at 108.61-64 yen, down from 110.26-27 yen.
