Hyundai Motor looking at exporting compact car EON

October 17, 2011 09:42 pm | Updated 09:42 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) could begin export of its newly-launched entry level compact car EON next year, according to H.W. Park, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In an informal chat with presspersons after the launch of EON here on Monday, he said the company could be looking at South Africa and South American markets for a possible export of EON.

Mr. Park said the company had got encouraging bookings for EON since its launch a few days ago. “Since its launch on October 13, we have got over 5,000 bookings,” he said.

The company would be making only ‘minor' investments to expand the capacity from the existing 6 lakh units to 6.70 lakh units by next year, he said.

HMIL, he said, would be hoping to sell 1.50 lakh units of EON a year. Mr. Park indicated that HMIL would showcase yet another model developed on the ‘fluidic' platform during the next year's Auto Expo. In this context, he said HMIL had lined up 10 new models, to be introduced over the next four years.

To a query on whether the company would phase out its flagship ‘Santro' car, he replied in the negative. “Santro is one of the best selling models in India. Every month, we sell about 5,000 to 7,000 units of Santro,” he said.
