GM working on electric vehicle

A team of engineers at General Motors (GM) Technical Centre Bangalore is working on an electric vehicle suitable for Indian conditions, President and Managing Director of GM India Karl Slym said on Wednesday.

Speaking to presspersons here during the launch of Chevrolet Beat diesel variant, he said the government should also encourage such initiatives.

He also said that GM would be launching 14 variants under five new models over the next 18 months that have latest technology.

Meanwhile, refusing to disclose the type of vehicle under development, Vice-President of the company, P. Balendran said that there were also many issues pertaining to electric vehicles, including those of tax relief, charging stations, subsidy and others. Incidentally, the company showcased its Chevy Beat battery electric car recently.

Mr. Balendran also said that the automobile industry would witness a single digit growth in 2011 owing to high interest and fuel costs.
