The Indian Tea Association (ITA) has expressed concern over the continued decline in tea crop due to unfavourable weather conditions.
It said in a release that over and above the 11.5 per cent decline in the first five months of 2012, the gardens in North India suffered an 8 per cent drop in production in June, according to a crop survey conducted by the ITA.
Since the beginning of 2012, India has been witnessing downtrend in tea production.
This is visible across all tea regions except Cachar.
The apex industry body noted that the Tea Board has just released crop estimates for ‘during and up to May 2012’ which shows that production is down in both North and South India.
During May, while North Indian crop is down by 2 million kg., South India is down by 1.6 million kg. The all-India tea production during January-May is down by 28 million kg.
