A court here on Saturday allowed a petition seeking continuation of in-patient treatment at a city hospital for multi-crore Satyam scam accused B Ramalinga Raju, who is suffering from hepatic ailment.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate K Sudhakar in his judgement directed the Superintendent of Chanchalguda Central Prison to provide treatment to Raju, former Satyam Computers Chairman, for Hepatitis C at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).
However, the court observed he should not be allowed to meet any outsiders or use cell phone, computer and laptop with internet facility to communicate with or to influence the witnesses.
“Raju should not be allowed to meet others except either his wife or son to attend him in the hospital and he should not be allowed to influence any persons with regard to the case,” the Judge said.
“In view of the readiness of petitioner’s (Raju’s) wife to bear the medical expenses and after the opinion of the doctor, it is necessary to provide treatment to Raju for Hepatitis C as in-patient in hospital,” the judge noted.
Ajit Kumar, Head of Gastroenterology Department at NIMS, who appeared for examination before the court yesterday, said, “at least initially for 2 months in-patient treatment is needed for Raju immediately with constant health monitoring which is not possible on out-patient basis. The risk is very much high, as there are likelihood of complications as Raju is already suffering from cardiac problems.”
The CBI also told the court that if Raju’s condition was really serious, then they had no objection for his in-patient treatment. However the investigating agency sought for strict surveillance by Chanchalguda Jail authorities during treatment period at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Raju, who is presently under judicial remand at Chanchanguda jail, was re-shifted to NIMS last night after he developed high fever linked to the hepatic ailment, a senior Jail official said on Saturday.
A medical report of the department of gastroenterology at NIMS had said Raju may suffer from hepatic failure and other complications like hepatic coma or even liver cancer which will make the disease incurable and advised to start treatment at the earliest.
Raju’s wife Nandini in her plea sought the court’s intervention to permit in-patient treatment for Raju and offered to bear the expenses, after the NIMS asked the Chanchalguda jail authorities to arrange Rs 8 lakh for the treatment.
