August 06, 2010 10:28 pm | Updated 10:28 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Videocon Mobile Services has crossed the one-million mark in respect of subscriber base in the first quarter of its operations in Tamil Nadu. In an interaction with The Hindu , Aravind Santhanam, Chief Operating Officer (Tamil Nadu and Kerala), Videocon Telecommunications, said this was a phenomenal growth in a competitive market in the State.

The most aggressive service rollouts covering more than 800 towns with over 20,000 retail outlets and 15,000 activation points across the State, helped the GSM operator to achieve this position, Mr. Santhanam said.

By adopting an effective pricing and distribution strategy and offering several value-added services, including access to Facebook, the company could target the key customer group of the youth, Mr. Santhanam said.

The company was also planning to launch schemes bundled with Videocon handsets soon, he said.

Brand support

The Videocon brand was the biggest support for the success, he said. The company was operating out of seven circles in the country and Tamil Nadu contributed 20 per cent of the market share. In two months since the launch of its services in Kerala, the company could achieve a customer base of 2.4 lakh in the State, he said.

The pre-paid GSM service operator was in the ninth position at present on an all-India basis and the plan was to reach the third place in three years, he said.
