Carmaker Hyundai, whose factory near here is witnessing a strike since Tuesday by a section of the employees, said that there was a drop in the number of employees who abstained from work. The statement from the company came even as Hyundai Motor India Employees Union, which called for the strike, said the protest continued.
The company, on Friday, said production at the two plants in Irungattukottai remained on schedule. The number of workers who abstained from work dropped to 150 from 180. On Thursday, 2,176 cars were produced, and this would be maintained on Friday, too, the release said.
The strike, according to Hyundai Motor India Employees Union general secretary R.Sridhar, was called in support of various demands, including recognition of the union by the company, reinstatement of workers dismissed four years ago, and for wage increase. The company reiterated that it had already recognised UUHE ((United Union of Hyundai Employees), which has a membership of over 1,300 of the 2,007 permanent workers, and signed a wage agreement with it last month. Further, 400 employees who are not members of UUHE had also accepted the wage settlement.
