The RPG Group on Tuesday announced its plans to set up a carbon black project in Tamil Nadu which may be its biggest Indian capacity at a proposed annual production of 1.5 lakh tonnes.
Company chairman Sanjiv Goenka said that SIPCOT authorities have made an in-principle allotment of 60 acres at the SIPCOT Industrial park in Thervoy Kandigai in Tamil Nadu near the Ennore port. “We have applied for environmental clearances,” he said.
Indicating that there may be other projects in the South, he said that Tamil Nadu was chosen first as it is emerging as the country’s automobile capital. He said that the capacity may be set up at one go but in a modular fashion.
Mr. Goenka was unwilling to declare the intended investment for the project but said that together with a 20 MW power plant, the project may need an investment of about Rs. 450 crore.
The city-based PCBL now has units in Durgapur in West Bengal, Kochi in Kerala and Mundhra in Gujarat which is newest plant in India. It is also setting up a greenfield unit in Vietnam and is pursuing an acquisition in Germany.
