The Porsche board of management has given the go-ahead for the production of the 918 Spyder super sports car that is scheduled to hit the road with hybrid technology by the year 2014.

The 918 Spyder, featuring many eco-drive functions, would be positioned in the price category of the Carrera GT at around 450,000 euros, Porsche CEO Michael Macht said recently.

“Like the Carrera GT the 918 Spyder is a technical piece of art and exceptional artwork has its price,” Macht said.

The Spyder convertible was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show this year as a concept study fitted with a 3.4-litre V8 and an output of more than 495 hp. In addition three electric motors provide an additional 215 hp.

It could be built as a two-or four-wheel drive, plug-in electric zero emission vehicle or with petrol power, as a convertible or hard top version.d
