Otis to expand Bangalore elevator facility

April 15, 2011 12:39 am | Updated 12:39 am IST - MUMBAI:

Otis India has decided to expand its existing elevator factory in Bangalore.

The expanded facility will be three-times the size of the current factory and will include a test tower. The new 27,500 sq. metre manufacturing facility will incorporate leading Otis technologies from all over the world and is being built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards.

A company release said an expanded factory will enable Otis India to more effectively serve the domestic elevator market that is expected to reach 70,000 units over the next three years. Otis Elevator Company (India) is a unit of United Technologies Corp., U.S.

“Otis India is pleased to further build upon our 100-year history in India while strengthening our manufacturing presence in Bangalore,'' said Laurent Bruyre, Managing Director, Otis India. “Our expanded facility will ensure that Otis India is well-positioned to support India's exponential growth with quality, locally produced elevators, while conserving the country's valuable resources.'' The Bangalore factory will also supply the company's growing portfolio of customers in India.

“This ground-breaking marks the beginning of a new phase of Otis's leadership in India,'' noted Mr. Bruyre. “Since the first Otis elevator was installed in Calcutta in 1892, we have successfully partnered customers throughout India. Today, we look forward to expanding our local manufacturing expertise while providing more than double the number of job opportunities to the people of Bangalore.''

Recently, Otis was selected to provide 63 elevators and escalators as well as its full range of elevator technologies for Kohinoor Square, a state-of-the art office complex in Mumbai. Kohinoor Square will include one of India's tallest office buildings and is now pursuing LEED Platinum certification from the Indian Green Building Council. Otis also supplied its energy-efficient Gen2 elevators to Kohinoor Hospital in India, the first hospital in Asia, and only the second hospital in the world, to be awarded LEED Platinum certification.

Otis Elevator Company is the world's largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products including elevators, escalators and moving walkways. With headquarters in Farmington, Connecticut, Otis employs 60,000 people, offers products and services in more than 200 countries and territories and maintains over 1.7 million elevators and escalators worldwide.
