NTPC to expand capacity

NTPC on Thursday announced its plans to augment its power generation capacity to 75,000 MW by 2017. It also announced diversification of business into renewable and nuclear energy.

Addressing the annual general meeting of the company here, Chairman and Managing Director R. S. Sharma said hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources would contribute 12,000 MW by 2017 (hydro 9,000 MW, nuclear 2,000 MW, and renewable energy 1,000 MW) of the targeted capacity addition.

The company had set a capital expenditure target of Rs. 17,700 crore during the current financial year.

Mr. Sharma said the company was working on its six captive coal mines with a production target of 12 million tonnes annually (mtpa) by 2012 and 47 tonnes annually by 2017. NTPC was also scouting for opportunities to acquire coal mines abroad for securing the fuel supply, especially in Indonesia, Mozambique and South Africa, he added.
