National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco), on Thursday, reported a profit of Rs.223 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2012, 41 per cent down from Rs.377 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

Net sales have gone down marginally to Rs.1,718 crore from Rs.1,733 crore, the company said in a release.

While the production of bauxite during the quarter increased to 11.42 lakh tonnes from 11.21 lakh tonnes, alumina production was up at 4.76 lakh tonnes against 4 lakh tonnes, it said.

Power generation was slightly lower at 1,614 million units against 1,679 million units, and aluminium production at 1.03 lakh tonnes against 1.11 lakh tonnes.

Nalco sold 1.02 lakh tonnes in the first quarter as against 1.09 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.
