Jindal's Oman steel unit commences production

December 07, 2010 11:09 pm | Updated 11:09 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. (JSPL) on Tuesday announced that its Jindal Shadeed plant in Oman has commenced production almost five months ahead of the targeted date of March 31, 2011, with the production of hot briquetted Iron (HBI).

Jindal Shadeed has installed a 1.5-million tonne gas-based HBI plant at the Sohar Industrial Port area of Sohar in Oman. This facility will support the strong demand for steel in the Middle East and North African countries, which had an anticipated supply shortfall estimated at more than 12 million tones, an official release said here.

Shadeed's acquisition is significant for JSPL as the facility is engineered by world-renowned Kobe Steel (Japan) and Midrex (U.S.), leaders in the field of direct iron technology. This is also the same technology JSPL will be using in its Orissa facility, and the additional experience will help bring this new facility on stream in a timely manner.

JSPL, through its 100 per cent subsidiary Jindal Steel and Power (Mauritius) Ltd., Mauritius (JSPLM) had acquired Shadeed Iron and Steel Co. LLC (Shadeed in July for $500 million.
