GE India, on Friday, said it would invest $200 million (around Rs.1,100 crore) in a new facility that would come up at Chakan, near Pune, to develop localised products and solutions for the energy sector.

In a statement, the company said that the plant, spread over 68 acres and GE's first such in India, would commence operations of its first phase in 2013.

Enviro-friendly tech

The facility will initially focus on energy products and technologies to cater to the industry needs for power generation, transmission and distribution, measurement and control.

In addition, the company said, it would package its environment-friendly technologies such as hybrid batteries for energy storage and biogas power generation technologies at the plant.

Employment opportunities

The plant is expected to generate employment opportunities for over 2,000 and from an initial area of 4.50 lakh sq. ft., it has the potential to expand to one million sq. ft.

The site would enable assembly and production support for any GE business that needed local manufacturing, the company said.

In a statement, John Flannery, President and CEO, GE India, said, “Our new manufacturing facility aligns well with the government's objective of strengthening manufacturing and overall infrastructure of the country. GE has been consistently working towards developing technologies and products that are localized for India, we will continue to invest in the country's infrastructure and contribute to improving the quality of life for the people.”

GE already has a wind turbine assembly unit in Pune and its recently acquired Dresser business builds and tests industrial process valves for the Indian market and exports. GE's industrial solutions plant in Bangalore makes switchgears, control panels and marine and industrial breakers. GE Healthcare has three manufacturing facilities in Bangalore in addition to an R&D centre.
