Gameloft shuts India studio

February 01, 2013 03:22 am | Updated 03:22 am IST - CHENNAI:

Paris-based mobile games development firm Gameloft has reportedly downed shutter on its India studio, and, in the process, laid off nearly 250 employees without notice.

Game developers at its Hyderabad centre, also known as Gameloft India, were told to “pack their belongings and go home” in an afternoon meeting on Tuesday.

“The HR manager told us that the studio would be closing and that we would have to find jobs elsewhere. While some of us have been offered employment in other studios, most of us have nothing,” said an employee, who did not wish to be identified.

The $200-million firm, which has over 20 development centres across the world, is traded on Europe’s Euronext exchange. When asked for a comment, a Gameloft spokesperson refused to confirm or deny the allegations and told The Hindu that they would “not officially be providing a statement at this point.”
