Ford India, on Monday, said it is in the process of recalling certain batches of its Figo and Classic models to inspect potential issues related to the rear twist beam (RTB) and power steering hose (PAS). As many as 1.28 lakh cars will be recalled to check for the twin defects.

Under the “voluntary and pre-emptive field service action”, rolled out on July 23, all Figo and Classic vehicles manufactured between January 2008 and December 2010 will have their RTB inspected and replaced, if found defective. The issue is a potential crack in the RTB that first manifests in the form of an abnormal noise from the rear. If the noise is ignored and the vehicle continued to be driven, it could lead to the RTB unit breaking, resulting in diminished ride and handling and brake performance, potentially rendering the vehicle inoperable, according to a release. A total of 1.11 lakh vehicles will be inspected in India for the RTB issue. Figo and Classic (previously known as Fiesta) sold during the three years will need to be inspected but will not necessarily need part replacements, the release says.

All Figo and Classic petrol engine vehicles manufactured from September 2010 to February 2011, totalling 17,655 units, will have the PAS replaced as a precautionary measure to ensure long-term durability of the vehicle. The issue identified is the potential for an oil leak to develop in the hose which could result in potential fumes being emitted from the area causing a leak. It may also be possible for power steering fluid to come into contact with the vehicle’s exhaust components creating a potential for smoke and in extreme cases, fire, the release says. The car maker is contacting owners of potentially affected vehicles via letters and through its nationwide dealership network. Owners may also contact the dealers or call Ford India Customer Relations Group on 1800 419 9889.
